This has the potential to be one of, if not the, busiest trade deadline in NFL history. A lot of big names have been mentioned as potential trade candidates (Davante Adams, Derrick Henry, Saquon Barkley, Montez Sweat, Chase Young). Most of them will likely not be moved, but to me regardless of what teams say they are all on the table for the right price until 4pm today when the trade window closes.
The NY Giants started the moves yesterday afternoon by trading Leonard Williams to the Seahawks for 2 draft picks, a 2nd & 5th. As a fan I hate that it has come to this for my team that I had high hopes for going into the season. But that aside this was a great return executed by Joe Schoen, a 2nd and a 5th for a 30 yr old on an expiring contract. It wasn't done to free up cap space as initially reported, the Giants are actually paying majority if not all of Williams remaining salary in order to get the better picks. It was done with an eye to 2024 where we now have what will likely be a top 10 1st round pick and two 2nd rounders. This leaves the Giants with a lot of flexibility as they decide whether they want to go all in for a new QB or draft multiple starting caliber players to fill the teams holes.
And they may not be done making moves yet. While the Barkley rumblings will likely amount to nothing (even though I mentioned in an earlier blog I'm all for moving on) I think the most likely trade candidate at this point will be CB Adoree Jackson. It will likely be in another move to stockpile more picks, but with the influx of youth they have brought in to the secondary Jackson is a moveable piece with value.
Around the rest of the league rumors the one that makes the most sense to me is Davante Adams leaving the Raiders. The move makes way too much sense, the Raiders are not utilizing him at all, the QB he came here to play with is gone, and he is a guy that a contending team looking for that big play WR will pay premium trade value for. Imagine what the Chiefs would look like with Adams? What about Dallas? This is a move that would help set the Raiders up for the future, and get Adams to a team that will hopefully utilize him properly.
As for the rest of the big names I don't think Henry gets moved, but his teammate QB Ryan Tannehill may see some increased interest after all the QB injuries this past weekend. I think everyone on the Commanders is on the table to go, it's very likely one or both of Sweat & Young are moved. Denver says they aren't "shopping" anyone, but that doesn't mean they won't answer the phone if someone calls regarding guys like Jeudy, Sutton, or especially Javonte Williams. Maybe one of the QB needy teams picks up the phone and asks Bill about Mac Jones and what that would cost? Maybe Khalil Herbert is close to coming back and a RB needy playoff contender takes a shot with the Bears certainly out of it.
The potential is there for a big busy day, let's stay tuned...
