FINALLY!!!!!!! The 3 month staring contest is over!!! We can finally start posting our versions of the 2025 Mets lineup, Cohen and Stears played a game of chicken with Scott Boras and won. The market closed pretty quickly on Pete when guys like Christian Walker, who is a 3 time Gold Glove winner, and offensively a little less pop but more consistent but also a few years older, got 3 years $60m. Then there was Anthony Santander, same age similar type offensive numbers as Alonso but plays mainly OF but he got 5 years $92.5m (mostly deferred).
There was a secret meeting that happened in Tampa between Pete, his scumbag agent Scott Boras, Steve Cohen and David Stearns. Pete voiced his displeasure of how the negotiations went this off-season, no one knows who his displeasure was with but Cohen and Stearns both told Pete their desire to have him back at 1B at Citifield.
Pete had 2 offers from the Mets
Door 1
*2025 is $30m
$20m salary
$10m Signing bonus
with opt-out after this coming season
If he doesn't opt-out
*2026 $24m
Door 2
*3 years $85m that included heavy deferrals and opt-outs after the first 2 seasons.
He chose door 1.
If you're a Mets fan you should feel really good about where this franchise is headed with Cohen and Stearns running the show, they are pressing all the right buttons and making a lot of the correct decisions even when crazy fans like myself think they should do something different. and Steve is not afraid to step in when needed like he did with Pete.
Steve Cohen, in an interview today, said:
"I wanted to humanize the negotiations, I wanted him to hear it straight from me - 2 human beings having a real conversation"........."I was clear. I told him, I want you back. We want you back." Cohen also said he wanted to hear Pete say he also wants to be back, he didn't want a someone who didn't want to be with the Mets, Pete made it very clear he too wanted to be back in Queens.
And we can't forget the person probably most responsible for the deal getting done...............
