My biggest regret of this NFL season so far is I didn't get to doing this sooner. Nothing better than an NFL Football Sunday if you are a sports fan, and Week 7 delivered some damn good excitement, starting with the outright assault committed by the Baltimore Ravens, and ending with the Eagles reminding everyone they are a force in not only the NFC but all of the NFL ( as a Giants fan it nauseates me to say, but hey it's the truth). So let's get to the Biggest Takeaways from Week 7:
The AFC East is Wide Open
Going into this season most (myself included) thought the AFC East had the potential to be the best division in football. Fast forward to Week 7 and it looks to be a wide open race of who actually wants to play well enough to win it. Buffalo yet again went out and played down to their opponent and this time they actually lost the game because of it. Say what you want but Josh Allen & the offense have not been the same since Brian Daboll left, and I see nothing to say it's going to change anytime soon. The Dolphins, everyone's preseason darlings, they've lost the 2 biggest games they played all season and looked inept in both of them. They have time to turn it around , but the reality is you can only go so far if you can't win the big one under the brightest lights. The shortcomings of these two teams have left the door open for the 3-3 Zach Wilson led Jets to still have a glimmer of hope in this playoff race. You can argue the Jets with the bye had the best week of these 3 teams. We'll see how they respond in their Week 8 MetLife battle with my NY Giants. As for the Patriots, they won but they stink and no one can seriously be dumb enough to think they are bouncing back from 2-5 to make a serious run. As a football fan I am All In to see where the cards fall with the other 3 teams in this division.
Same Ol' Lions?
The best thing Dan Campbell could have done for his team yesterday was file an order of protection from Lamar Jackson at halftime. The Ravens absolutely decimated the Lions every which way but easy, I don't even think the 38-6 score does justice to what we saw out there from the guys claiming to be the Detroit defense. It was like watching someone play Madden on rookie mode the entire 1st half with Baltimore had the ball. I believe they took the foot off the pedal in the 2nd half and that's the only reason they scored just 10 2nd half points. Jared Goff has proven once again he can't win on the road , the only bright spots being that St. Brown ( 13-102) is back healthy and that without Montgomery we finally saw what Jahmyr Gibbs (126 total yds) is capable of in the NFL. The Lions are 5-2 and still sit very comfortable atop the NFC North, but if they don't figure out how to play on the road they are not going far in the playoffs anytime soon.
The Giants look better with Tyrod Under Center
The Giants offense looked outright horrific for the first 5 weeks of the season, aside from the 2nd half in Arizona. They showed some life in the loss to Buffalo last week with Tyrod Taylor in for the injured Daniel Jones, but still didn't get in the endzone. Enter Week 7 and the Washington Commanders , and things began to look up for Big Blue. Taylor (279 yds - 2 TD's) look competent and confident at QB, something we have rarely seen from Jones this season. The 2 biggest offensive weapons, Darren Waller (98 yds - 1 TD) & Saquon Barkley (118 total yds. - 1 TD) both scored, and the defense terrorized Sam Howell for 6 sacks and Deonte Banks' first career INT. Fact is offensively the Giants have looked not perfect , but a far better run football team with Taylor under center these last 2 weeks. The defense has been on the field less and therefore looks better. I truly believe it's going to be a very hard sale to just hand the reins back to an underperforming Daniel Jones once he is healthy. Maybe it's my fandom talking and I don't give a shit if it is, but I don't think this team is dead yet and it starts with getting production from the offense. If you don't believe that as we sit here today Brian Daboll has a QB controversy on his hands you haven't been paying attention. Let's see how this one plays out.
Those are my Top 3 takeaways from Week 7 Sunday of this 2023 NFL season. We can give a quick honorable mention to the Chiefs for another big win, and Justin Herbert for choking in another big moment and throwing a pick, which no joke Ray Smarsh predicted exactly 2 mins before it happened...NICE TRY JUSTIN!!
Last game of Week 7 is tonight in Minnesota with the 49ers coming into play the Vikings. Even with no Deebo, no Williams up front, and CMC if he plays being nowhere close to 100%, I'm going 24-21 Niners victory. And if you want a player prop to throw in your parlay go with Brandon Aiyuk over 4.5 receptions.
Enjoy MNF!!!
